we don’t usually do the whole surprisebirthdayparty thing very well over here. probably because it’s been so overused, we don’t bother anymore.
but sometimes. it does work. even when it wasn’t meant to be a fanciful surprise. it helps when the birthdayboy’s slightly blur.
poor boy spent most of his birthday on wow because i had to work. he asked m if he was free to spend the day with him but m tells him he didn’t have time for him. which i thought was a really funny(good) touch to the whole surprise thing.
i sent him an invitation in the morning for dinner at Koko where we had the best seats in the restaurant (it helps to book more than a week in advance *shifty eye look* i’m very manic).
we were in an isolated corner right next to the pond

which, amazingly, i did not fall into (or drop any phones into). we had to cross the pond to get to our table.
and we were by the window with a lovely view of the yarra river

we finished dinner and he gave me a couple of options of activities we could do after dinner. we could 1) go to the city to buy more umeshu (but it’s too cold! and i’m too lazy!) 2) we could go home and fry chicken wings and drink beer while watching a movie (but we didn’t defrost any chicken!)
he went hmm doesn’t really feel like my birthday. so he got all psyched up to leave for home to fry chicken wings while i waited for the waitress to bring the first surprise

he thinks it’s embarrassing. well, he wasn’t the one singing with the waitress. but at least after a cake, it felt more like a birthday.
and then he tells me to quickly get the bill so that we can go home and fry chicken wings. (seriously)
and i was evidently giving all sorts of feeble excuses + obliging too much to fried chicken wings (i don’t really fancy fried chicken wings) because we had another surprise

the rest came for (more) cake at greco (he went huh? what you all doing here? OH! to celebrate my birthday??)

he gets another sparkly cake surprise (omg. more singing.)
and i think we had a pretty happy night.

happy birthday!
hope you felt more birthdayjoy by the end of the night.

Alex, if you’re reading this, happy birthday.
Koko’s cool coz they give you a free cake if it’s your birthday, as a “surprise”. We’ve gotten 2 cakes out of them already. hahaha
Alex.. happy birthday! so happy seeing you two together.. so sweett… ^_^
